The Challenge

A 400-person professional services firm was running on-premises servers due to age 4 years past end-of-life. Annual hardware refresh quotes were coming in at $1.2M, with 3-month procurement lead times. Security audits were flagging the aging infrastructure as a material risk.

Our Solution

Migrated all workloads to AWS over 14 weeks using a lift-and-shift for legacy apps and cloud-native re-architecture for new services.

We used the AWS Migration Acceleration Program framework to assess and categorize all 47 workloads: 31 were lift-and-shift candidates, 12 needed minor re-architecture, and 4 were retired as part of the migration (consolidating redundant systems). We ran the migration in three waves, starting with non-critical workloads and working up to production. Zero data was lost and the highest-risk production cutover window was 4 hours on a Sunday morning. Post-migration, we implemented AWS Cost Explorer and automated rightsizing — turning off dev environments evenings and weekends, moving to Reserved Instances for steady-state workloads, and using S3 Intelligent-Tiering for archival data. The infrastructure bill dropped 43% from the projected on-prem refresh cost.
